July 7, 2006 at 06:41,   Yang Sun said: The French midfield is phenomenal. Even Zidane is not in his top condition, Vieira and Makelele can still form the world's best midfield. At the beginning of the tournament, we thought that every game could be Master Zidane's last game. Now the legendary continues and he presents us a full 7-game show. At the end of the final when the fans of the world saying goodbye to Zizou will the massive ovation leave him in tears? However, I'll have to let my preference go to Italy. So far they have 12 goals (including an OG) coming from 11 different players. When their side backs become side midfielders and side midfielders become winger forwards, Lippi presents us an attacking Italian team that we have not seen since 1982. I look forward to seeing their 4-forward formation again that they used in the overtime against Germany. The Italian soccer is in a dark age. Some of their players may need to play in lower level leagues next season due to the scandal of the top management. I believe that the players are blameless. They need to win a beautiful final match and to win the championship more then ever. Thanks to the semi-final referees for well controlling the games and not giving out a lot of yellow cards so that none of the key players are banned. It is going to be a happy ending.
July 2, 2006 at 02:06,   Yang Sun said: Zidane's art sparks French renaissance. Vive Zidane!
July 1, 2006 at 18:54,   Dejan Korkut said: nooo, England are out! well, that's football. I hope Germans win now.
July 1, 2006 at 15:28,   Dejan Korkut said: Ballack showed great class. After being butchered by an Argentine player, he could barely walk in the 2nd half. Still, he managed to set up a goal and score a penalty. Why do Argies have to start a fight and throw punches when they lose? They should just congratulate their opponents and move on.
July 1, 2006 at 07:25,   Thong Duong said: At the risk of using an over used statement, I have to say it "That's why they play the game." You have to be good and lucky to win the Cup. Argentina was great but not so lucky. The Netherland will always be the dark horse. Don't sweat it if your champion is no longer in the tournament, even Nostradamus was wrong. I really thought Mexico was going to do something in this cup. Germany really looks like it is their destiny to win it this year. Since I was assured that I will not finished last on the table of World Cup predictor, I am happy to say "Go Germany!" FYI, after the 1998’s fiasco in France, the US soccer association’s goal was to win the cup in 2010. I will try hard as heck to be in South Africa in 2010. With a little bit of luck, Vietnam and the US will in the cup in 2010. OK, maybe with a ton of luck! But then again “That why they play the game!”
June 30, 2006 at 19:20,   Ozgun Bekki said: Well, good that nobody copied my predictions, as I have no hope more more points after Argentina was kicked out in the semifimal round... By the way, congratulations to Dr. Fowler, too as he is one of the many participants to beat me in the prediction game... ;>
June 30, 2006 at 19:11,   Yang Sun said: Pekerman should not have let Riquelme out so early. You do not see this guy showing off a lot, but he had successfully decreased the tempo and well controlled the midfield. Argentina definitely plays at a lower level without him. Pekerman should not have used the defensive formation with only one goal leading. Unfortunately, the injury of Abbondanzieri cost a substitute. Otherwise, either Messi or Aimar can bring a difference. After all, there is nothing to complain with penalty shootouts. They have shown greatness. Well done Argentina!
June 30, 2006 at 19:00,   Yang Sun said: Pele has lost his prediction power. He used to have a nearly 100% (if not 100%) wrong prediction rate. Maybe penalty kicks are unpredictable.
June 29, 2006 at 19:12,   Yang Sun said: I have good news. The great Pele has predicted that Germany will win.
June 28, 2006 at 00:10,   Brett said: In retrospect, the 1500 were a difficult period, particularly from a standpoint of deciphering between the Spaniards and the Portugese. I would think Nostradamus was actually referring to the Portugese and their head-butting king Luis Figo III.
June 27, 2006 at 22:08,   Ozgun Bekki said: I don't believe Nostradamus anymore... Now, previous world champions to qualify for the 2006 world cup are all in the quarter finals: Germany, Argentina, England, Brazil, Italy and France. I wish to see a new champion this year. Why not Portugal?
June 27, 2006 at 16:13,   John Fowler said: It's a shame that FIFA has decided that the referees are the most important part of the world cup.....
June 26, 2006 at 20:51,   Brett said: If Nostradamus has his way, Spain is all set to lift this year's football World Cup. Spanish journalists have managed to find a prediction made by Nostradamus in 1555 about the outcome of the 2006 World Cup, Russian magazine 'Pravda' said in a report. The 16th century author of prophecies wrote that "the Spanish king and his army will cross over the Pyrenees at the end of the sixth month of the sixth year. The king will win the battle with Beelzebub on the fields of Central Europe, and the army will return the Holy Grail to Spain". Interpreting the prediction, journalists said "The Spanish king and his army" stands for the national Spanish football team and its coach Luis Aragones. "The fields of Central Europe" stand for the football stadiums in Germany and "the Holy Grail" is the World Cup, the report said.
June 25, 2006 at 22:25,   Dejan Korkut said: Both Holland and Portugal can play very beautiful soccer. It’s a shame this turned into a rugby match. Portugal is lucky to go through but it will be very difficult to win against England without C. Ronaldo and Deco. I think Holland would have beat Portugal if they played van Nistelrooy, but van Basten made a big mistake.
June 23, 2006 at 22:05,   Ozgun Bekki said: Number of teams from each confederation at the beginning of the world cup and remaining in the second round is: Con. No.Teams No.Advanced ------------------------- -------- Asia 4 0 Africa 5 1 S.America 4 3 Ocenia 1 1 C&N America 4 1 Europe 14 11
June 23, 2006 at 17:26,   Ozgun Bekki said: Right now 15 teams have been eliminated in the group stages, lets see who is going to be the 16th, France, Switzerland or Korea. I think all three will have 5 points at the end of the games and Korea will be out due to goal difference.
June 22, 2006 at 01:58,   Kent McNeill said: one of the best polo players in the world is named Cambiasso (and, of course, is from Argentina)... i wonder if Esteban is related.
June 17, 2006 at 20:04,   Yang Sun said: The African teams are amazing. Ivory Coast could have advanced if they were in another group. The Ghana-Czech game was very entertaining as well. Ghana did not play safely when they were leading 1:0. Look at how many incredible saves the two goalies made! Now Group E remains as the "group of death" since no team has advanced or been eliminated today.
June 17, 2006 at 02:04,   Baroldo said: It was really exciting to watch Agentina play this morning; at last a team which had read my script for goals. They certainly have the heal pass down pat. The day went down hill from there 2-1 and then 0-0.
June 17, 2006 at 00:34,   Thong Duong said: The Argentinian looks to be the best team in the tourney so far. But let wait until they play the Netherland before we hand them the cup. Ivory Coast and S&M are quality teams, however they are definitely not Holland. Netherland vs. Argentina will be the match to watch. I am going to take a long lunch next Wednesday!
June 16, 2006 at 17:13,   Yang Sun said: What a game! My Argentina had just shown the greatest teamwork. Look at the countless one-touch passes they made that led to the goals. Six goals from only 12 shots - Serbia & Montenegro defenders must had felt hopeless watching the ball moving. "Football" is my favorite sports simply because of the continuity: there is no timeout! (I know American television stations do not like it since there’s no time for advertisements; for this reason soccer is not that popular in the US). Juan Roman Riquelme did well controlling the tempo in the second half and I was not expecting the other 3 goals. But there was Lionel Messi the amazing boy! Riquelme and Messi had shown some Maradona-Caniggia type of connection. The free-kick which had led to their 4th goal is similar to the free-kick for the 2nd goal Argentina made in 1994 against Nigeria. The Argentines had shown their best. I won’t feel bad even if the World Cup ends today.
June 15, 2006 at 23:46,   Dejan Korkut said: Ecuador vs Germany is going to be an interesting game. Its amazing that Germany has to win or they'll meet England in the next round. Lahm is simply amazing.
June 15, 2006 at 04:31,   Venkat said: The Czechs and Italians are looking amazing. They will be tough to beat
June 14, 2006 at 05:40,   Thong Duong said: Brett, Landon was just saving everything he had for the Italian. Just get your Donovan shirt ready for Saturday!
June 13, 2006 at 22:44,   Brett said: Landon who?...Tom will someone remind him to show up on saturday :) Oh yeah! watch out for the Indian born mid-fielder, Riquelme Juan..talk about home grown talent!...
June 13, 2006 at 22:11,   Dejan Korkut said: Brasil are hooorrrrible, Ronaldo and Adriano, what a joke. Good news for Italy and Czech Republic, both of them are more than capable of trashing the Brasilians. Argentina was 5 times better than Brasil in their opening game. Kaka and Ronaldinho are class, but Ronaldo needs to lose about 25 lbs and learn how to run maybe. Good game Croatia, 1-0 loss to Brasil is not bad.
June 13, 2006 at 10:30,   Ozgun Bekki said: Aussies were really amazing. I really enjoyed watching that game although my prediction (1-0 Japan) didn't bring any points to me. Until the 83rd minute, I was getting 3 pts. then my mom and dad were happy after the first Aussie goal as they predicted a 1-1 tie. When it was 2-1 Australia, Jen thought she was getting 3 pts., but apparently Australia didn't want anybody in the house to get three points.
June 13, 2006 at 01:19,   Baroldo said: What happened to Australia; who forgot to tell them they had never scored a goal in World Cup action? If these teams are not going to follow history how can we be expected to get good predictions?
June 11, 2006 at 17:51,   Kent McNeill said: England will get stronger. Just wait until... yeah, it's not good.
June 10, 2006 at 23:47,   Dejan Korkut said: Argentina vs. IC - what a game, its really a shame both teams couldn't win. IC should have scored 5 goals, but Argentina was amazing. Can't wait to see Carlitos Tevez in action though. Holland watch out!!!
June 10, 2006 at 23:23,   Baroldo said: Kent you had better celebrate today. I did not see much to suggest England was going to advance very far. I can hardly wait for the England Sweden game (-2 to -4). It was interesting to find out that Englands striker was actual the past Dean of the Fulton School of Engineering; I did not recognize him without his beard.
June 10, 2006 at 07:21,   Ozgun Bekki said: Good job, Hari. You are the leader at the end of the first day.
June 9, 2006 at 04:48,   Yang Sun said: I often have a terrible R squared. Just show my support to Argentina rather than my prediction power.
June 8, 2006 at 19:31,   Kent McNeill said: The Europeans in Europe theory is a popular one, but as I recall, the last European world cup saw: (a) Basil in the finals; and (b) England losing to Argentina in the first elimination round... so the track record for South American teams is hardly as bleak as people make out.
June 2, 2006 at 20:23,   Dejan Korkut said: I'm really surprised to see how many people think Brazil or Argentina are going to win. The last time either of them won a world cup that took place in a European country was in 1958 - Brazil in Sweden. Gerard will humble Argentina, and Theo Walcott will score the winner against Brazil in the semis.

See if I can keep this going. Feel free to write done any comments, but I will not be able to respond until June 15th. Cheers!
June 2, 2006 at 01:22,   Kent McNeill said: i can't believe baroldo is dumping both the US and Ghana in the first round -- where's his team spirit?
May 17, 2006 at 21:29,   Ozgun Bekki said: You can copy my predictions if you want to win the prize : >
May 17, 2006 at 20:32,   Jennifer Bekki said: There's a new feature of the website now. If you want to make your predictions public so that we can see what each other's picks are for specific games, etc., you can edit your profile (under the "Entrants Tab" and then the link "my profile"). I think it'd be fun to be able to see what each other picked, but I'll understand if you're more secretive than I am. :)
May 16, 2006 at 23:54,   John Fowler said: I believe the US will make it out of their group. Even though though it is the Group of Death, the US has improved and should advance....
May 11, 2006 at 11:20,   Yang Sun said: I would vote for Croatia. They did well in the qualifying games beating Sweden. I think the US also have a chance since Czech is backsliding lately compared with their performance in Euro2004.
May 11, 2006 at 05:50,   Baroldo said: I do not expect to USA make it to round two
May 9, 2006 at 18:21,   Ozgun Bekki said: I also don't think that Crotia will either... (I wanted to correct my wrong sentence in my previous message)
May 9, 2006 at 18:19,   Ozgun Bekki said: I don't think that US will advance to the second round. I also don't think that Crotia won't either... I think Brazil and Japan will go to the second round from that group.
May 8, 2006 at 21:03,   Dejan Korkut said: just wondering, how many of you think that US will get beyond the group stage?
