Another decidedly mixed
day for the
soccer-playing teams of
the world. Full marks to
the Socceroos for their
gutsy draw with Croatia,
despite a chotic
second-half stopage time.
We were watching in a pub
that didn’t play the
audio for that game, so
when the final whistle
blew nobody knew why red
cards were being handed
out like candy, why 2
yellows didn’t warrant
being sent off the pitch
or even if Australia won
the game in the dying
seconds. And congrats to
Kwejibo - a big, dumb,
balding North American
ape with no chin and a
short temper- for leading
this pool for most of the
Group stage.

A decidedly mixed day for

of the world. The
Socceroos notched a whole
bunch of historic firsts
in their final 10 minutes
of fury, exacting a small
measure of revenge for
the bombing of Darwin.
The Americans seemed to
have history on their
minds as well, trying to
replicate their
disastrous showing in
France ’98 and force me
to curl up in the fetal
position in a darkened
corner. Next, giants
Brazil and Italy.

Rugby is known of, in the
broadest sense, but is
only played by a few
college club teams and is
watched live or on TV by
no one. The name “All
Blacks” sounds vaguely
familiar to American
sports fans. Beyond that,
hoping for an awareness
of such nuiances as the
fact that there exists
both a game called Rugby
League and Rugby Union is
asking far too much of
us.

I've been trying to call
the game
"football", but
in New Zealand most
people would think I was
referring to Rugby Union,
which is our national
game. Probably not well
known in USA.
