July 7, 2006 at 18:30,   Adi said: USA played the best soccer ever, they deserved to win the cup, those reffeerreess stole the whole show...it wasn't Arena's fault,or Reyna's,your people just can't play football
June 28, 2006 at 02:10,   Marc Howard said: Sure I can, watch. Arena, its your fault. Lol. McBride played ok against Italy hell he took a knock I would have been proud to take but why didn't Arena put in EJ when the Italians were tiring in the end. We had chances at breaks in the last ten minutes that McBride and Donovan were to tired to try for. That is coaching. Sure, some of it is players but when you put players in positions they are not used to and make late changes a few days before th cup that is also a bad decision.
June 26, 2006 at 23:15,   shanetrain22 said: I might agree with you on Reyna's attacking abilities, but he has a strong presence in the midfield and is capable of leading a team. As for the way the US played in the tournament, you can't blame crappy playing on the players part entirely on the coach. The US just didn't show up to play in this tournament, bottom line. As for Mcbride in the Italy game, Arena kept him in there because of his experience and in fact dropped in back into a defensive role and left Donovan up front. McBride did what he needed to do and it very well could have been one of the reasons the US didn't lose. The Czech and Ghana games the US just played timid and never tried to win balls (except Onyewu), that's in no way Arena's fault
June 23, 2006 at 05:14,   Marc Howard said: An asset? Do you knw that in all the world dup games Reyna has ever played in e have only won one of those? And in that game he played right back. He is not an attacking mid. Go back and look at the games again. Notice how many attacking chance3s reyna blows because he is to slow to make a decision. Notice also how many bad passes he makes and thus blows many chances to attack. An attacking mid is supposed to be your most attack oriented and creative player. Reyna is neither. As for Arena, why did the team come out today and seem to play with the same plan as during the Czech game. Why was there not more urgency in going forward? Why did we seem afraid of Ghana's speed and want to slow the play down? The answer is all in coaching. These were decisions made by Arena. Answer this also, why in the Italy did we "play for the tie" in the last ten minutes? Why didnt we put in Johnson who had very fresh legs and who might have exploited a tired Italian back line instead of McBride who was basically innefective as an offensive threat throughout the tournament. True he built a strong program but he has outlived his usefulness.
June 22, 2006 at 22:26,   shanetrain22 said: First off Marc, Bruce Arena has built the strongest National program the US has ever had. We got stuck in a tough bracket and only showed up to play for one game. He is a solid coach and rightfully deserves his position. As for Claudio, he's a solid player who made a mistake. It was an untimely one, but he still remains an asset to the national squad.
June 22, 2006 at 18:11,   Marc Howard said: FIRE BRUCE ARENA. Dismal.ccI've said it for years Claudio Reyna is an awful attacking mid. He holds the ball to long, cant make quick decisions, and does not attack. Here's to 2010. Imagine this line up. Adu, Johnson up front. Mids fom left to right; Beasley, Donovan, ?, Dempsey Defense from left to right; Specter, Guch, Marshall, ?
June 18, 2006 at 16:11,   Peter Sidlovsky said: Yesterday's performance by the US was phenominal. Italy should be disgusted with themselves. They couldnt score with a man advantage for 40 minutes?? Pathetic. Every time they were fouled...out comes the stretcher. Both US red cards=bullshit. If US beats Ghana, look for Italy to attempt a tie, just so we get knocked out on goal diff. It's synical but I wouldnt put it past Italy
June 18, 2006 at 04:12,   Marc Howard said: Chris, I dont which game you were watching today but the USA wanted to win and did everything needed to do so. Unfortunatley the ref did not allow that to happen. This was a blatant case of bias in favor of a traditional power. How could you ever turn against your team and country? So other than the first game which dissapointed all of us what has let you down?
June 18, 2006 at 03:40,   Peter said: srry, ment to type 25 fouls, not 15
June 18, 2006 at 03:39,   Peter said: the officiating in the usa game was terrible. every foul was against us. we had like 15-they had like 13 fouls. that ref should be suspended. but nice call about the offsides goal. brian was offside, and was out of position. plus, i think brian should come out, and ching in.
June 18, 2006 at 03:13,   Chris Miller said: As much as anyone wants to complain about the officiating (and boy do I want to!), the fact is that the US still has not scored a goal in this world cup. They still have not stepped up and said we will win this game. I hate to say this, but I'm rooting for Ghana! Better a team that wants to be in the next round than a team who thinks they should be in the next round. USA, you have really effing dissapointed me this world cup.
June 18, 2006 at 00:36,   Marc Howard said: Both red cards were BS. I think the Italians fixed this game too, with the work of that sketchy Urugauyan (Spelling sorry) Ref. Calling back that 2nd goal was also BS. Real score, USA 2 Italy 1.
June 17, 2006 at 22:43,   Andrew W. said: That first red card on the U.S. was total BS!!
June 16, 2006 at 19:56,   BIZKIT said: Italy will loose. Trust me. I came from a time machine from the future and i know everything that will happen this world cup.
June 16, 2006 at 18:00,   Marc Howard said: DO NOT BENCH DONOVAN!!! Landon is still our best threat. The problem is Arena had two guys trying to do one job, Donovan and Reyna. Get Reyna outta there and let Landon go nuts like he likes to do. Donovan's problem during that game was giving creative and attacking authority in the middle to reyna who is just to damn cautious and conservative. On World Cup Live Reyna again said we need to be cautious and careful against Italy. WRONG!! He's gonna lead us into another defeat. We need to ATTACK! This is what Americans are good at oing whatever it is we do. We dont defend we attack. Let Italy score three goals as long as we score four.
June 16, 2006 at 17:00,   Peter said: who farted during the usa game?
June 16, 2006 at 02:01,   Derrek said: I watched the USA/Czech game because I heard that the US team was supposedly very strong this year. Early on, in about the 6th minute the Czech scored just a beautiful goal that wasn't the keeper's fault at all. It was perfectly placed. From then on, the US could not get anything going. Frankly, in the first half they had only one legitimate scoring chance. The Czechs played well defensively and the US team couldn't find a way through. I would have thought that they would have tried some long balls, but they didn't seem to try this option. Even with the Czechs 2-0 up they still kept the pressure on and countered quickly giving them more chances. Not till the score was 3-0 did the US actually have a few chances. Johnson, who plays professionally in the US, had a couple of shots when the game was already a forgone conclusion. All in all, I wasn't impressed with the team one bit. They seemed to lack creativity and they didn't play as a unit. The Czechs looked like a well oiled machine and if they continue to play like they did I think they will challenge for the World Cup. As for the US, I don't think they will get past the first round. It looks like they'd need a decisive win over Italy and I just don't see that happening. The US has lost all of the eight World Cup games they have played in Europe and they might not win a game this year either.
June 15, 2006 at 23:07,   Peter Sidlovsky said: the whole world hates us. america dominates everything except soccer. since we're starting to get good at it, what better way for FIFA to stomp us back down than to give us an extremely generous (and undeserved) world ranking, then plop us in an impossible group. i know the group draws are random but c'mon. Everything seems to be working against US
June 15, 2006 at 17:32,   OLE!! said: so what are your predictions for the line up against italy? any new faces?
June 15, 2006 at 13:54,   Fox Salehi said: But, Dennis, it'll take a miracle to beat Italy with Italy in this form. Barthman, I might agree except that Arena changed his lineup dramatically for the Czech game (Beasley on the right, lone striker etc) and it didn't work, so reverting back to the kind of formation we're used to (2002 style) might be the best bet. Honestly, I think it's not that the US are that bad, but that Czech and Italy are that good, and we're going home solely because of the draw. We'd get through the France group, perhaps, or the Germany group for sure.
June 15, 2006 at 10:15,   Dennis said: One loss does not put you out of the World Cup. Turkey lost their first game in 02 and came back to finish third. Plus, I don't think the removing your top goalscorer (Donovan) and captain (Reyna) are the way you want to go anyways. Besides, Eddie Johnson works better coming off the bench, so starting him in place of Donovan would make things worse, if anything.
June 15, 2006 at 02:31,   Chris Miller said: I disagree. I say bench Beasley, Donovan and Reyna. Think about the criticism after the game. “Donovan was invisible”. “Beasley couldn’t create”. “Reyna couldn’t inspire”. Dump them. Let them know that that was the last game they will play for the US. It was embarrassing and when it comes to the world cup, you are playing for national pride, not your own self worth. Put McBride and Johnson up top; put some young guys in the midfield, keep the defense (they actually didn’t look that bad, even giving up three goals) and switch the keeper. Sorry Keller, this is a training world cup. We’re out until 2010, but we do much better away from Europe!
June 14, 2006 at 23:05,   Barthman said: In my opinion as an over-the-hill athlete, the last thing that will help a team win games during any major sporting competition is dramatic lineup changes. That's what all the qualifiers & friedlies are for -- experimenting and preparing players to work together. If we think that mixing up the lineup will solve our problems, we're going to lose to Italy just as badly as we did to the Czech Republic. Teams need to hit the ground running as the Czech, Spain, & Argentina have done(among others) if they want to have any chance to go deep. I desperately want us to win against Italy on Saturday, but it has to be our passion & attack that makes that happen, not lineup changes.
June 14, 2006 at 21:15,   OLE!! said: but we still have hope though =]!
June 14, 2006 at 18:17,   OLE!! said: though lost for the us. the pic above shows it.
June 14, 2006 at 16:03,   Marc Howard said: Well 2010 still depends on the draw. We got screwed by FIFA in favor of Mexico.
June 14, 2006 at 12:08,   Fox Salehi said: FIFA rankings mean nothing. I say bench Convey, put DMB on the left where he's fantastic, play Johnson up front with McBride, play Donovan at the top of a diamond and Mastroeni behind. Play Reyna right back and Bocanegra left back. Same centre backs. Play O Brien right wing. And TIMMY HOWARD IN GOAL cause he would have saved Rosicky's first (sorry Kasey). And despite all that, I think Italy will win. Wait for South Africa. The States will make the Quarters at least.
June 13, 2006 at 19:28,   Marc Howard said: I say bench Beasley! His attitude seems terrible. Play Dempsey and let Donovan play the creative role in the middle. Start Wolff and Johnson up front and maybe move Mastroeni to the back for Pope. I dont know what to do with Reyna, he slows the attack down to much and we fail to take the attack to the opposing team. Maybe move him to right D for Cherundolo. He's played there before, am I right?
June 13, 2006 at 16:57,   Jumba said: yes, that would be a good analogy to come true. it's going to take a MUCH stronger effort all around
June 13, 2006 at 13:04,   Marc Howard said: That is funny!!! We sure did suck and hopefully its like stomache flu. We puked and now we can feel better and get to work.
June 13, 2006 at 00:01,   Andrew W. said: From the looks of that contest, I think the US brought its ice hockey team to the Cup, not its football team.
June 12, 2006 at 21:40,   Brent said: Why is the states ranked 5th in the world?
June 12, 2006 at 04:07,   Jumba said: I thought Holland was very impressive yesterday. they had like twice as much time of possession as serbia. they are so technically sound its crazy
June 12, 2006 at 02:59,   Chris Miller said: Go Mexico! I was glad to see our neighbors to the south win. They played well and capitalized on mistakes. I can't say the same for england or holland. Both looked lackluster in games they should have dominated. As for the US, the truth will be told in the game tomorrow. They have to get 3 points out of that one, and I'd love to see Ghana grab a tie from Italy!
June 10, 2006 at 21:11,   Peter said: pav, u r crazy!!!
June 10, 2006 at 15:24,   Pav said: David Beckham is the most overrated player in the world. He's lethal on set plays, but he can't dribble, run, or defend.

June 9, 2006 at 19:52,   Marc Howard said: Just a personal note. I HATE Mexico so much I'm gonna cheer on the Iranians Sunday. Who's with me? And what the hell is with Los Angles, MEXICO, Derek???
June 9, 2006 at 08:02,   Jumba said: I agree that Germany has a good chance to go far. They have a relatively easy draw to the quarterfinals, probably against England. they have a young talented team and with a good goalie and are very strong on set pieces. if the US can win its group we should get a rematch against germany in the semifinals this year! HAVE YOU ALL BEEN CHECKING THE STUDIO 90 USA SOCCER BEHIND THE SCENES BROADCASTS FROM WWW.SOCCERNET.COM? THEY ARE GREAT LOOKS AT MATCH PREPARATIONS AND PLAYER PROFILES. PEACE!
June 9, 2006 at 07:28,   John Binder said: Sorry guys ... I love USA, I'd love to see this year, but 1). Italy and the Czech's are simply more talented than the American team 2). Even if we come out, we'd play Brazil in the first round, and lose. It's theoretically possible to beat both the Czechs and the Azure, but improbable. JB
June 9, 2006 at 05:51,   Yo Adrian said: So, Brazil is going to be the winner of Group F, no doubt. Doesn't this mean that if we're runner up of our Group E, we'd have to play Brazil?! Only way to avoid playing Brazil in the 16 is to come out on top of our group!

June 9, 2006 at 03:34,   Angelo_WOOOO said: I also see that alot of ppl are picking brazil. Alot of people fail to recognize the fact that a South American team has never won the world Cup in Europe. Not that its not likely, but just something to keep in mind.
June 9, 2006 at 00:01,   Dao said: i see lots of people picking brazil to win it all again. how cum more people dont chose germany to be the winners. they've got the home field advantage and it helps (look at south korea in '02). tell me your reasons.
June 8, 2006 at 20:48,   Marc Howard said: Pete, I think you might be right but we got screwed in favor of Mexico. WE should have been the seeded team in that crappy group. But I still predict Mexico wont make it outta that group. Their arrogance will work against them against Iran and Portugal will tie or beat them as it is in Europe.
June 8, 2006 at 19:54,   Garrett said: If the US can get out of the group on top, I can see us making it to the finals
June 8, 2006 at 15:22,   Peter Sidlovsky said: Does anyone else think the FIFA rankings are totally squewed? USA is ranked 6th and we really havent beaten anyone good except for Mexico. The old pricks who head FIFA dont want to hear how the US played better than expected so they build us up so if we do anything but win the group it will appear as if we didnt live up to expectations. Either that or I gotta lay off the reefer. *Side prediction: Arrogant Italy will not make it out of group E
June 8, 2006 at 14:54,   Loco said: They all get eliminated. They don't deserve to advance.
