July 14, 2006 at 08:56,   C'mon Engerland! said: Just saw this from The Guardian: The World Cup has gone and the hole it has left is almost as big as Danny Williams' shorts. It is a vacuum that sucks in regret as a blue whale does krill, as Ronaldo does carbohydrates.
July 13, 2006 at 17:22,   Blokemon said: Every country I've been to on this jaunt has agreed that Italy winning was a travesty. Australia were robbed of the World Cup. Although there does seem to be a lot of bandwagon jumping Italia shirt-wearing dickheads in Serbia and Bulgaria.
July 12, 2006 at 16:28,   C'mon Engerland! said: Well thanks for the good, but ultimately uncontested game! Fine effort by DD. I was actually in the Adelaide Oval watching the Aussie v Italy shocker. Very sad. But quite funny over-hearing conversations like: "Did you see that? Are you sure the goalkeeper's allowed to use his legs?" Anyway, good to see the Beautiful (but recently, as you all point out, corrupt) Game alive and kicking Down Under. Oh, and what's that about Ronaldo? He's fat you say? James
July 10, 2006 at 16:34,   justinmm said: I seemed to have not mentioned that Ronaldinho's "R" headband (worn in the QF) was the MOST STUPIDEST thing of the World Cup, and possibly of all-time. With the headband and Ronaldo's fatness, well it's no wonder Brazil were sh*te and I was denied my 69 dream.
July 10, 2006 at 09:50,   justinmm said: The penalty incidents were contested balls in the penalty area and they are always contentious decisions, especially with the way players fall over at slightest contact, and the players did not make much of a fuss. But he let the game flow, got most decisions right and controlled a physical match sensibly. He was a minor part of the story. As for Poll and Merk, well at least the former 'fessed up and retired. I think Merk is so far up himself he's beyond help.
July 10, 2006 at 08:08,   Noonan said: Penalty that wasn't in the first ten minutes to put France in front. Blatant penalty to France missed ten minutes later, is that his incompetence balancing itself out? He missed battering ram Zidane somehow... Interesting note that the Herald Scum (in what was a remarkably valid coverage - it didn't fawn too much over the Australians) voted Merks worst ref of the tournament, noting that Merks' comment to Kewell - "that's the end of your World Cup" was as misguided as the rest of his day in the middle. Good call, Poll went into such a meltdown that you couldn't really call him a ref that day.
July 10, 2006 at 04:49,   justinmm said: Well I was supporting anyonebutitaly. Guess I took a beating then. Zidane! WTF?! Seems he got sent off after the 4th official (or was it the 5th official? the 69th? How many officials do we need?) saw the replay. This is weird for a game that doesn't use video refs. No excuse for Zizou though. I thought the ref was OK.
July 9, 2006 at 23:41,   Noonan said: Well I was supporting bad refereeing decisions in the final. I think I won.
July 7, 2006 at 07:21,   Noonan said: Looking at the front page 1st place will be one of two people. Of the two top scorers in the comp one picked France to win and one Italy. Ronaldo is fat.
July 7, 2006 at 03:35,   Noonan said: Robert, that was part of Denis Leary's French rant from No Cure For Cancer... Utter genius, it is: "It's PATE. I don't pronounce the little faggy squiggly thing above the E. "
July 7, 2006 at 02:42,   DiggerDoos said: With a bit of luck....and some cheating I could reach a century by Monday morning. Please sit down and stop clapping...am not there yet! However, you guys with the french fetishes are starting to freak me out....
July 7, 2006 at 00:41,   Robert Hodgson said: Where did that come from! ... red card yourself Noonan.
July 6, 2006 at 08:01,   Noonan said: Hot Blueberry sauce could be hot French semen for all I know! Wow... I'm really out of control on this French thing.
July 6, 2006 at 00:50,   Carboy said: I'm not going to try and justify acceptance of Italy's cheating like Noonan. I can't believe I'm writing this but Vive la France! Allez les Bleus!
July 5, 2006 at 23:44,   Noonan said: I'd like to think that my score has been rounded up and is actually 69 + a bonus 6.9. I differ to Carboy in my thoughts. After watching Italy against Germany yesterday I am of the opinion that if the Australia game went into extra time Australia would have lost. Buffon has only conceded one goal this tournament and that was to one of his team mates. It's also a much better thing to have been knocked out by the World Cup winners by an awful decision than by the runners up. The other thing worth noting is that Ronaldo is fat.
July 4, 2006 at 23:55,   Carboy said: Well that's me out. 69 + 1. Mr Utting if you would like to form a coalition we can win this on an average of 69
July 4, 2006 at 07:47,   Robert Hodgson said: Still think Germany will win.... but go Portugal I say!
July 3, 2006 at 06:40,   Carboy said: The best I can do is 80. I would like to finish on 70 so I could be one of those who finished closest to 69 but that would mean Italy would be in the final. Personally I don't give a toss who wins from here as long as it isn't Italy. Which it will be just to give Australia the shits for the next 4 years. fucking cheats. Maybe we can cheer for Portugal?
July 3, 2006 at 06:22,   justinmm said: Yep, 0 out of 4 in the Semi Finals for me, and my dream of finishing with a 69 denied. Still can't quite believe Argentina managed to lose a game they controlled for so long, how poor Brazil were, and how average German and Italian teams could make it this far. I can of course easily believe that Ukraine were boring and England lost on penalties. I'm going to have to cheer for France. Weird.
July 3, 2006 at 05:14,   Noonan said: I clearly will finish on 76 points. My dream of an all South American final... Shattered, I blame the fact that Ronaldo is fat, Rooney a tool and the sinking of the General Belgrano in 1982 for my poor showing past the round of 16.
July 3, 2006 at 01:01,   Emmanuel H said: sweet - no more points for me. 0 from 4 for the semi finals - now that is hard to tip! strong rumours that Houllier will be the next Aus national coach.
July 2, 2006 at 23:57,   DiggerDoos said: Ahhhh....with a few results on the weekend diggerdoos back where he belongs (no not jail). Argentina & Brazil out makes victory in site unless those awful huns continue to produce upsets. Surely Italy can lie, cheat, bribe at least one more game to ensure I finish on top? After what they did to the aussies, they owe me one!
July 2, 2006 at 16:58,   Blokemon said: There were a lot of very upset Brazil supporters at the Budapest hostel last night. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... pity that Italy are still in. Cheats.
June 30, 2006 at 15:13,   Blokemon said: Lads, the Fritz-Walter Stadion in Kaiserlautern shook with boos and whistles on June 26. The neutral fans (plus some Italians) all agreed that we were robbed blind. Anyway, as the Italians slunk out of the stadion the 5000 Aussies stayed around to smash piss and sing ditties. Good fun, despite the result.
June 30, 2006 at 08:02,   Noonan said: Nearly DiggerDoos... Here's how it's going to go... Argentina Win, England Win. Beckham gets a red card for the sinking of the General Belgrado in 1982.
June 30, 2006 at 01:15,   Noonan said: Ukraine will be dull.
June 30, 2006 at 00:32,   DiggerDoos said: Further predictions are: Argies to knock of ze germans; Beckham to be red carded against Portugal; Brazil France to go to penalties; and Ronaldo will be fat!
June 30, 2006 at 00:09,   Carboy said: well germany vs Argentina should be a pretty good match
June 29, 2006 at 23:24,   Noonan said: Thankfully it all starts again tomorrow morning... After Australia got knocked out I needed more matches to keep my enthusiasm up, not a couple of days off.
June 29, 2006 at 03:41,   DiggerDoos said: Agree....since my fall from grace from 1st spot....my interest has waned. Who the hell predicteded Italy to win the thing?....oh thats right, me !
June 29, 2006 at 02:29,   Noonan said: Not all that much call to pop in here for a couple of days, I guess. I doubt much is going to change...
June 29, 2006 at 02:14,   Robert Hodgson said: I wish I was there to console Patience.....
June 28, 2006 at 06:30,   justinmm said: Diggerdoos comment regarding Juventus ... Lippi is of course an ex-Juventus manager which explains how he can so brazenly claim it was a clear penalty ... he would done this for at least 69 dodgy penalties at Juve. And one for the conspiracy theorists ... A spanish FIFA official appointed the spanish referee for the Oz-Italian game and an italian referee for the spanish game. So there it is! Actually I'm not entirely sure how this is especially conspiratorial (and spain lost) but that is what "The Times" is saying so it must be dodgy!
June 28, 2006 at 05:18,   Noonan said: Breaking News from The Grates website: Brisbane resident and full time member of The Grates, Patience Hodgson, cried yesterday when her digital pet dinosaur died after being alive for less than 24 hours. Amazing.
June 28, 2006 at 04:50,   Noonan said: So will justin... It's a moral victory. The sad fact is, no one else can do it...
June 28, 2006 at 04:48,   Noonan said: I'm in position 1001 now, but completely failed to hit 69 points. JY will hit 69 on Saturday morning if the Argies beat Gerry.
June 28, 2006 at 02:54,   Noonan said: Hey, doll. Could you scare up another round for our table over here? And tell the cook this is low grade dog food. I've had better food at the ballgame, you know? This steak still has marks from where the jockey was hitting it.
June 28, 2006 at 01:13,   Emmanuel H said: hey wang - that is the best news i have heard in weeks. fkng excited!!!!! tuna colada?
June 28, 2006 at 00:23,   Carboy said: I am moving to Melbourn so I can eat there every day. 1 Noonan burger please. Oops!
June 28, 2006 at 00:20,   DiggerDoos said: The Aust. V Italy mirrored many a Juventus game over the past 40 years.....handball by them (not given)....dive in box by them (penalty given)...am sure the president of the Italian association picked which ref he wanted ...as they do in Italy! But having said all that, my initial thought was a penalty until the slow mo replay showed the weak prick do everything possible to connect with Neil. Ronaldo is fat...
June 27, 2006 at 23:25,   Noonan said: I was just getting over my anger at the penalty yesterday when I saw that Ghana had a player sent off (on his second yellow card) for diving. Come on.............. Then I saw that Bill Murray has been in Melbourne recently scouting locations to open Australia's first Caddyshack restaurant (Eat, drink and be Murray) so I got over it again.
June 27, 2006 at 08:31,   Noonan said: WHAT???? From Fox Sports News: The sight of Harry Kewell arriving on crutches was hard enough to believe. The reason was even harder. Australia's finest footballer was ruled out of its biggest match by gout. Again: WHAT???
June 27, 2006 at 08:15,   Robert Hodgson said: Second best.... Laslo Urgay wins every time (AKA Les Murray)
June 27, 2006 at 08:12,   Noonan said: Mitch Comstein. Best name ever.
June 27, 2006 at 06:17,   Noonan said: Ty Webb: Let me tell you a little story? I once knew a guy who could have been a great referee, could have gone pro, all he needed was a little time and practice. Decided to go to college instead. Went for four years, did pretty well. At the end of his four years, his last semester he was kicked out... You know what for? He was night putting, just putting at night with the fifteen-year-old daughter of the Dean... You know who that guy was Danny? Danny Noonan: No. Ty Webb: Take one good guess. Danny Noonan: Bob Hope? Ty Webb: Ha ha... No, that guy was Mitch Comstein, my roommate. He was a good guy.
June 27, 2006 at 06:12,   Noonan said: Lippi, that's the dude they call "Paul Newman" because of his striking similarity to Leslie Nielsen. I assume "nailed on" is some kind of Roman Catholic thing about Australia being crucified by the ref, not that it was a correct decision. It's now over twelve hours since that decision. Ronaldo is still fat and I am still angry.
June 27, 2006 at 04:55,   justinmm said: The italian coach Lippi is claiming it was a "nailed-on" penalty. Yeah right. I am sure if it had been given at the other end the Italians would have calmly and graciously accepted it.
June 27, 2006 at 04:21,   justinmm said: Yep, blowing goats pretty much sums it up. The ref made two crappy decisions but you don't win many games if you don't score a goal (unless you're Ukrainian). The Italians were knocked out of the last WC after having five (5!) goals wrongly disallowed so this sort of thing happens every WC. Still sucks donkeys balls though. And how the hell have boring Ukraine made the QF? They say national character is reflected in a country's football team, in that case avoid the Ukraine. It'd be crinkly faced, illiterate, toothless peasants and potato-peel soup if the football is anything to go by. Ukraine v Italy - I can wait for that one. But at least Ronaldo is still fat.
June 27, 2006 at 03:08,   Robert Hodgson said: Was an incorrect decision, that's all there is to it - but it wasn't the only one during the game. It still blows goats. Ref's are still arseclows. Ronaldo is still fat.
June 27, 2006 at 03:01,   Noonan said: It's now about nine hours after that awful decision. I am still not happy. Ronaldo is still fat.
