It's the Final Countdown

30 teams have been eliminated, only two remain. France and Italy will battle it out for the World Cup crown, while at the top of the WCP leaderboard, Jonathan Dapice from Canada and David from New Zealand are battling it out for the ultimate cash prize. And, as in the World Cup, there's nothing for second place :D

Semi-finals semi-complete

There have been big changes in the top 10 of the World Cup Predictions leaderboard after some of the fancied teams were eliminated. David from New Zealand leads on 110 points after his favourite team Italy knocked out Germany 2-0 in extra time in Dortmund.

Don't worry if your predictions haven't turned out too well, you can still enter the Daily Challenge.

Quarter-final countdown

Just eight teams now left, and there's six points up for grabs for each team you correctly predict to reach the semi-finals.

The question for England fans is, who on earth do you support in a match between Germany and Argentina?

June 17, 2006

Landai lands first place

Landai from Malaysia is in first place as we approach the halfway mark in the World Cup Finals group stages, with 31 points from the 23 matches played so far.

Last night Argentina completed a 6-0 thrashing of Serbia and Montenegro. 13 entrants got the score exactly right! Check out the match review to see if you were one of them!

Mad about footie?

The appropriately named Mad about footie is in first place in the lead-up to tonight's group A and B matches. The wisdom of the crowd is that England will overwhelm Trinidad and Tobago 3-0; but will it be so easy?

Kentish man hops to number 1

Rob Richardson from Kent has opened up a 2-point lead after Tuesday's World Cup matches. He now has 24 points, with 5 players in joint second place on 22 points.

New feature: check out the match previews for today's three matches!.

It canna handle the load, cap'n!

In the 10 minutes after each match finishes, thousands of people all try to log on to the site at the same time to check their score. Unfortunately:
1. The site gets overloaded and some people get a 'CPU Quota Exceeded' error
2. The scores won't have been updated yet anyway, as I'll still be cycling back from the pub ;)

If you wait 10 minutes and try again the problems will usually have been resolved!

O Canada

North Americans dominate the top 10 of the leaderboard after Sunday's matches. Lij & Brady's Mom and Murphy from Canada join Victor Moreno from New York in joint first place. Don't miss the Gallery to see the latest entrant photos!

Today Italy, the USA and the Socceroos all see their first outings. There's still time to enter today's Daily Challenge, new competition at noon Berlin time.

June 11, 2006

Top of the table!

Five group matches have now been played and there's a three-way tie at the top of the World Cup Predictions leaderboard, with Jody from Ireland, Peter Clainos and Murphy from Winnepeg all on 10 points.

You can also check out the new teams table to see which country's fans are the best at predicting: so far Ecuador are well in the lead, probably because they had rather more confidence in their team's performance over Poland than everyone else!

Strange error messages

If you've been trying to access the site over the past 24 hours, you may have seen an error message saying "CPU Quota exceeded". There has been so much interest in the site as the World Cup begins that our server is struggling to cope! Please bear with us while we try to fix the problem. If you get an error message, waiting a few minutes then trying again normally fixes it.

Last minute madness

Just three hours to go until kickoff! We're crossed the magic 15,000 users barrier. Don't forget that all predictions will be frozen 5 minutes before the Germany/Costa Rica match starts.

Once the matches have begun, check out the Daily Challenge for your chance to win a £10 CD vouchers from our friends at cd-wow.com. There's a new voucher up from grabs every day during the World Cup!

What are your predictions for the Germany match? Should be easy for the Germans, right ;) ?

Ten thousand entrants!

Today we passed an amazing milestone: ten thousand registered entrants! Don't forget you only have four more days to finalise your predictions. All predictions will be frozen just before the first World Cup match kicks off!

Of course, the fun only starts there! You'll be able to log in after each day's matches to see how many points you have scored, and more importantly if you're leading your mini-league! Plus, you can enter The Daily Challenge for a chance of winning some more great prizes :)

Let the best fan win!

Congratulations to Brianne Tsavatewa, the winner of the iPod nano in our first lucky draw. Don't worry if you didn't win this time, there's plenty more chances to win... If you recommend a friend via the tell-a-friend page by June 3rd, you could win a copy of the great game from EA Sports: FIFA World Cup 2006!

This Saturday is your last chance to win an iPod nano. Head over to the tell-a-friend page, remember every friend you recommend the site to gives you an extra chance of winning the iPod. The draw will take place tomorrow, and the winner will be announced here!

Picture special

Two new features :)

First, you can now add an image to your user page. Just go to the edit profile page and choose a JPG file to upload. Look out for the icon to show if a user has a picture.

Second, for all you tech-heads, all mini-league banter boards now have an RSS feed. This means you can subscribe for the latest banter updates with your favourite feed reader or browser. Look for the icon in your browser's address bar to subscribe.

What did Aunt Celia predict?

Many people have asked me "how do I see the predictions of other people in my mini-league?" The answer used to be... "you can't". Until today: now you've got a choice, you can make your predictions public or private. Just go to the edit profile page.

If you choose private, then only you can see your predictions. If you choose public, other people will be able to see them as well. Look for links saying "View full predictions" on the league tables to click through to your friends' predictions.

Let the banter begin

Two new great features:

Every mini-league now has a banter board where you can post messages: who do you think is going to win, comments on your colleague's latest haircut, and so on

If you run a mini-league, you can now invite users. Just find their user page from the entrants list and click the link to invite them.

Private mini-leagues

I've had many requests for private mini-leagues and am pleased to announce they are now LIVE! Here's how it works:

  1. When you create a mini-league, you can choose public (anyone can join) or private (approval required)
  2. League owners can change their league to public or private using their Owner Tools section
  3. If you try to join a private league, an email is sent to the league owner. They can accept or reject your membership
  4. League owners can manage membership requests on the website with just a few clicks :)

There are more features coming for mini-leagues over the coming days including messageboards and easier ways to invite new users to your league

Mini-leagues have arrived!

You can now create minileagues to compete with your family, enemies, friends and colleagues. It's really simple... to create a new league, go to create mini-league; you can choose a name for your league and even a JPG file to use as a logo. To join an existing mini-league, just browse through the list of leagues.

As ever, if you have any feedback on this feature please do send in your comments and suggestions!

Tell us who you are!

Check out the competition :) On the new entrants tab you can see the list of entrants (already over 600). Click on a name to see their user page. If you want to edit the profile that's displayed on your user page, simply edit your profile. You'll also see a list of any mini-leagues you're a part of. Mini-leagues, what are they? Hold on for another announcement ;)

April 23, 2006

By popular demand

We've had over 150 entrants in the first 24 hours, wow! Several people have already emailed me to ask if you'll be able to set up mini-leagues with your friends. I say: definitely, that feature should be ready by next weekend. If there are any other features you'd like, feel free to post a comment here or contact us directly.
