Em-pressive

Wed 26th June Emily Knight is the new leader of World Cup Predictions after the second semi-final saw the boys from Brazil progress to the final. Another eight points from the day took Emily's total to 119, five ahead of Joe Golby and Peter Hull.

The countdown has begun to the final on Sunday when Germany meet Brazil. Who will be lifting the World Cup trophy... and who the World Cup Predictions trophy?! There's only one way to find out.

Golb-enballs

Tuesday 25th June Joe Golby is still topping WCP after picking up 8 points from the successful progress of Germany into the final. But golden girl Emily Knight is hot on his heels with eight points from the day as well. Simon G is up in third while Peter Hull is looking dangerous in fourth, with just 16 points left up for grabs.

Joe and Jo

Saturday 22nd JuneWhile Joe Golby retained his lead of World Cup Predictions, jo_chest was one of only ten entrants to score today. Six points took Jo from 178th to 55th. The surprising progress of Turkey and Korea caught most entrants by surprise! Cowboy, Jamie Chancellor, Sir Liam Tinniswood, Andrew Dmoch, Max Onyskiw, James E Doyle, Jon Stevens and Teck Wee were the only other scorers.

Stay tuned to World Cup Predictions as we enter the final week...

Terror of Tamworth

Friday 21st June The longest day of the year saw Tamworth's Joe Golby take the lead of World Cup Predictions. Six points for the day took him to 106 points overall, one ahead of Daniel Trout. It was another great day for Emily Knight who scored a maximum 12 points to take her into 3rd. With only six teams now left in the competition, it's crunch time for the entrants at the top of the leaderboard. Suddenly the prediction of Saudi Arabia to reach the final doesn't look so good...

Gowers powers ahead

Tuesday 18th June The second round concluded today with another 10 points awarded. Daryl Gowers scored 5 points, enough to see him move into the lead for the first time in the competition, with a slender one-point advantage over Joe Golby and Daniel.

Three entrants: Emily Knight, Srikkanth Balakrisshnan and Simon Jones predicted the progress of both Turkey and Korea and scored 10 points for the day. Emily was the highest scorer for this stage of the competition, predicting 6 of the 8 quarter-finallists correctly, enough to move her into 21st place. "Good old Turkey - knew they'd do it," said Emily in our post-match interview, "but I am slightly biased towards them, being a quarter Turkish .. and three quarters delight!"

The next matches take place on Friday, but make sure you check back daily for the Daily Challenge!

Matt is top cat

Monday 17th June Six of the eight quarter-finallists are now known, with Brazil and the USA winning today. It was a great day for matthew s: his ten points from predicting both correctly lifted him from 13th into 2nd behind leader Luke Ashton. Eight other entrants: Stewart Spear, ghdsyhg gjfhdjfdj, Nick Roll, Gavin Bogart, St. Brendan, Paul Yates and Logan Powell repeated his feat. Tomorrow sees the last two second round matches, with the 100 point barrier likely to be broken for the first time!

Still Luke-ing good

Sunday 16th June Luke Ashton is still topping World Cup Predictions after a day in which Senegal and Spain dramatically qualified for the quarter-finals. Five points from the day was enough to see him stay ahead of rival Daryl Gowers.

Luke-ing good

Saturday 15th June Luke Ashton from Widnes has gained the lead of World Cup Predictions on the first day of the second round matches. Luke, who was lying in 77th just two days ago, picked up 10 points for predicting both England and Germany to reach the quarter finals. With England progressing, it's no surprise to see so many English flags at the top of the table. Daryl Gowers has moved up into second, two points behind Luke, and Tamworth's Joe Golby is now third. There's another 10 points up for grabs tomorrow!

Chan you believe it?

Friday 14th June It's all chan-ge at the top of the World Cup Predictions leaderboard as Jacky Chan takes the lead after the points for second round qualifiers were awarded. Jacky correctly guessed 11 of the 16 qualifiers, a feat matched by second-placed Daniel Trout. However Luke Ashton predicted an impressive 13 out of 16 and has shot up the table from 77th to fourth. Other entrants to match 13 out of 16 were Chris Hughes (up from 215th to 23rd), Dale Ashwell (398th to 29th), Michael Anders (597th to 75th) and Matt Sloan (716th to 234th).

With tournament favourites France, Argentina and Portugal all out, the next few days could prove very interesting!

Five alive

Thursday 13th June: Brazil knocked in five goals against Costa Rica in a 5-2 thriller on the penultimate day of group matches ... and an impressive five entrants predicted the unlikely scoreline exactly! They were Tom Oakman, Joe Lesbo, Conall Kelly, St. Brendan and Pedro Pena. The day's highest scorer though was Colin Fallon from Wokingham, who picked up 8 points from a possible twelve. q o retained his lead at the top of the table, but it could be all change tomorrow as the points for the second round qualifiers are awarded!

Another one bites the dust

Wednesday 12th June: More worries for World Cup Predictions entrants: first France, now Argentina have been eliminated in the group stages... half of the top twenty have predicted one or the other to win! The day's top scorers were Alastair Bryce, Ben Gordon and Peter Bennett, who all picked up 7 points from a possible 12.

There was another 1-1 draw in the Sweden/Argentina match. That means the tactic of predicting a 1-1 draw in every match would have won you 29 points so far, putting you 213th ... not bad!

Flying fish?

Tuesday 11th June: On a dramatic day in the World Cup, Daniel Trout leapt into the joint lead of World Cup Predictions with an impressive seven points from the day. Chas Adrion, Russell Ward, David Robinson and Ryan Johnston all matched Daniel's haul for the day; but not a single entrant predicted the shock result of the day: Denmark 2, France 0!

France's early exit will be a major blow for entrants who have predicted France to win the competition, but the few who predicted Senegal to progress will be very happy!

Golden Grahams

Monday 10th June: There was little change at the top of the table on a generally low-scoring day. Cambridge's Graham Gordon moved into second behind leader q o.

In fact, new analysis shows that being called Graham is conducive to success in World Cup Predictions. We've ranked all the different first names by average number of points (you need to have three people to appear). Graham comes out on top, closely followed by Jack and Jim. Mark, with 18 separate entrants, also does very well, in 6th place. By contrast, the four Kevins are ranked 434, 527, 873 and 894!

KO for q o

Sunday 9th June: q o, the succintly named but highly successful leader of World Cup Predictions has extended his lead after Sunday's three games. Six points on the day took him four clear of Jack Burton, his closest rival. Two entrants though, Sam Shad and Paulo Mente did even better, picking up a perfect nine out of nine points from the four games. Sam leapt from 89th to 5th, while Paulo sped up from 367th to 46th!

Two weeks into the contest then and the leaderboard is hotting up! It could all change as we enter the knockout stages though, as many teams people expected to progress probably won't. Stay tuned to www.fantasyfacup.com/worldcup/ over the next fortnight for all the latest news.

Something fishy?

Saturday 8th June: Daniel Trout was one of an amazing 114 entrants who correctly predicted Brazil's 4-0 drubbing of China, moving him into joint second with Jack Burton, behind leader q o. By contrast only 7 people correctly predicted Croatia's 2-1 win over Italy. The day's top performer though was Ronan Lally, whose 7 points took him from 70th to 5th.

Hello q o

Friday 7th June: After seemingly the longest 45 minutes of football ever known to England supporters, the shortest named entrant of World Cup Predictions took the lead of this year's competition. q o of Paris picked up four points to move ahead of Neil Brown and Rob Ryan Unsurprisingly, the day's highest scorers, with 7 points, were all England supporters: Mark Wilkinson, Adam Seaman, Danny Smith, Daryl Gowers, Daniel Letchworth, Eric Crowder and John Amers. Will their form sustain as long as England's?

Rob Roy

Thursday 6th June: World Cup Predictions has a new leader! Rob Ryan of Hudderfield scored four points from today's matches, enough to put him level with long-time leader, Canadian Neil Brown. The best performance of the day however was by Liverpool's Roy Kelley. He had been in a cringe-worthy 881st place, but 7 points today shot him up 323 places to 558th. Entrants who predicted France to win the Cup will be understandably nervous after today's 0-0 draw with Uruguay. That includes 5 people in the top 10!

American beauty

Wednesday 5th June: The performance of the day goes to Ramiro Castilloof the USA, whose 7 points from a possible 9 sent him shooting up the table from 509th to 133rd. The only points he failed to bag were from the scoreline in the USA/Portugal match. Only three entrants, Joe Coulson, Dylan and Derek Brown managed to predict the unlikely 3-2 victory to the USA exactly correctly.

The big interview

Tuesday 4th June: Neil Brown continues his dominance of World Cup Predictions and has given us a mini-interview...

What's your reaction to being top of the leaderboard?

SURPRISED!!!!!!

How did you go about choosing your predictions?

Very quickly, when my son dragged me over to the computer.

Which teams do you think have looked most impressive so far?

Argentina, Spain, and Senegal!!! (who would have thought?)

You predicted Spain to win the World Cup, why?

That's just the way my scores panned out, they may have a good chance anyway.

Alex Ashworth is now clear in 2nd place, with Wayne Harris and the intriguingly-named q o in joint third.

Hat-trick for Patrick

Monday 3rd June: What a difference a day makes! Yesterday Patrick Colvin was marooned in 310th place, but three perfect predictions out of three has lifted him an astonishing 290 places to 20th. At the top of the table, Neil Brown extended his weekend lead to three points, with the closest challengers being Alex Ashworth and Graham Gordon. Scotland's Michael Skene is still trying to find his form (unlike Senegal, the team he appears to be supporting). He has only got two points so far and is rooted to the foot of the table.

Brownian notion

Sunday 2nd June: Three days gone, eight matches played and the World Cup leaderboard has its first real leader. Neil Brown from Canada has picked up 15 points so far, including four perfect predictions ... in fact, he's failed to score on only one match (France/Senegal, would you believe!) Which is more than can be said for countryman Martin Dion... he is rooted to the foot of the table in 911th place having failed to pick up a single point so far!

Neil is closely followed by a clutch of players on 14 points, all of whom will be hoping to overtake him in the next few days.

Who eight all the pies?

Saturday 1st June: Another three matches today and the leaderboard is starting to look a bit more healthy. So far there are 24 entrants tied on 7 points apiece. Derek Brown was not that far off Germany's 8-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia... he had predicted 26-0. Only eighteen entrants are yet to score. Rachel Dixon was the first winner of the Daily Challenge. Check the home page for today's challenge.

Sen-sational

Friday 31st May: Senegal's unexpected triumph over France came as a major surprise to almost all the participants in World Cup Predictions. In fact, just three of the 931 entrants have scored any points at all... the lucky three are Tom Dallas, Joe Coulson, and Edward BB. See the (rather short) leaderboard.

World Cup Predictions begins!

Midnight, Thursday 30th May: World Cup Predictions has officially begun! The number of entrants has surpassed all expectations, with an amazing 913 football fans from around the globe competing. With just a few hours left to the opening match, who will be the first to head the World Cup Predictions leaderboard?
